- शुजा और मुराद की हत्या: औरंगजेब ने अपने दूसरे भाई शुजा को भी हराया, जो बाद में जंगलों में भाग गया और मारा गया। अपने तीसरे भाई मुराद को भी उसने चालाकी से पकड़कर मार डाला।
- शाहजहाँ की कैद: औरंगजेब ने अपने ही पिता शाहजहाँ को बंदी बना लिया और उसे आगरा के किले में कैद कर दिया, जहाँ वह ताजमहल को देखकर तड़पता रहा और अंततः वहीं उसकी मृत्यु हो गई।
सत्ता के लिए अपने ही परिवार के सदस्यों को मार देना और उनके साथ क्रूरता से पेश आना औरंगजेब के निर्दयी स्वभाव को दर्शाता है।
2. धार्मिक असहिष्णुता और मंदिरों का विध्वंस
औरंगजेब ने खुद को “ग़ाज़ी” (धर्म का योद्धा) घोषित किया और इस्लाम को बढ़ावा देने के लिए कई नीतियाँ अपनाईं। लेकिन ये नीतियाँ धार्मिक सहिष्णुता की जगह असहिष्णुता और दमन को बढ़ावा देने वाली थीं।
हिंदू मंदिरों का विध्वंस

- सोमनाथ मंदिर: इस मंदिर को भी लूटकर नष्ट कर दिया गया।
- विजयनगर और कांची के मंदिर: दक्षिण भारत में कई महत्वपूर्ण मंदिरों को तोड़ा गया।
ग़ैर-मुस्लिमों पर कर (जज़िया) लगाना
अकबर के समय में जज़िया कर हटा दिया गया था, लेकिन औरंगजेब ने इसे फिर से लागू किया। यह कर केवल हिंदुओं और गैर-मुस्लिमों से लिया जाता था, जिससे वे आर्थिक रूप से कमजोर हो गए। इससे व्यापक असंतोष फैला, और लोगों में आक्रोश बढ़ा।
हिंदू त्योहारों पर प्रतिबंध
औरंगजेब ने हिंदू त्योहारों, जैसे दिवाली और होली के सार्वजनिक समारोहों पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया। इससे हिंदू समाज में भारी रोष था।

सिखों पर अत्याचार
गुरु तेग बहादुर, जो नौवें सिख गुरु थे, ने कश्मीरी पंडितों की रक्षा के लिए औरंगजेब के जबरन धर्म परिवर्तन के खिलाफ आवाज उठाई। इसके बदले में, औरंगजेब ने उन्हें कैद कर लिया और इस्लाम अपनाने के लिए कहा। जब उन्होंने मना किया, तो उन्हें दिल्ली में बेरहमी से मौत के घाट उतार दिया गया।
इसके बाद, गुरु गोबिंद सिंह और उनके परिवार को भी मुगलों ने अत्यधिक यातनाएँ दीं। उनके छोटे बेटों को दीवार में जिंदा चुनवा दिया गया।
मराठाओं से संघर्ष
मराठा राजा शिवाजी महाराज ने औरंगजेब की नीतियों का कड़ा विरोध किया। औरंगजेब ने शिवाजी को धोखे से आगरा बुलाया और कैद कर लिया, लेकिन शिवाजी वहाँ से बच निकले।
शिवाजी के नेतृत्व में मराठाओं ने मुगलों को कई बार पराजित किया। उनके निधन के बाद उनके पुत्र संभाजी ने औरंगजेब के खिलाफ विद्रोह जारी रखा। औरंगजेब ने उन्हें भी पकड़वाकर नृशंस रूप से मार डाला।
4. प्रशासनिक नीतियाँ और अत्याचार
अनावश्यक युद्ध और विस्तारवाद
औरंगजेब ने पूरे भारत पर कब्जा करने के लिए लगातार युद्ध छेड़े, लेकिन इससे केवल आर्थिक और सामाजिक समस्याएँ बढ़ीं। दक्षिण भारत में उसकी लंबी सैन्य मुहिम ने मुगल खजाने को खाली कर दिया और अंततः मुगल सेना कमजोर हो गई।
कठोर प्रशासनिक नीतियाँ
- हिंदुओं को सरकारी पदों से हटाया गया और इस्लामिक कानून लागू किए गए।
- शराब, संगीत और अन्य कलाओं पर प्रतिबंध लगा दिया गया।
- सूफी संतों और अन्य उदार मुस्लिम विचारकों पर भी कड़े प्रतिबंध लगाए गए।
5. मुगल साम्राज्य के पतन की शुरुआत
औरंगजेब की कठोर नीतियों ने मुगल साम्राज्य को भीतर से कमजोर कर दिया।
- धार्मिक कट्टरता के कारण हिंदू, सिख, राजपूत और मराठा सभी मुगलों के खिलाफ हो गए।
- निरंतर युद्धों के कारण राज्य की आर्थिक स्थिति खराब हो गई।
- उनकी मृत्यु के बाद कोई सक्षम उत्तराधिकारी नहीं था, और जल्द ही मुगल साम्राज्य बिखरने लगा।
